March 2021 Newsletter: Harness the Power of Three

Share Post:

1. Stand Out in a Crowd

There is still time to be recognized for your hard work and dedication to driver and transportation safety. Use this online form to apply for the Our Driving Concern Texas Employer Traffic Safety awards. Need to know what to include in your application? Check out this best-practices brochure and learn about the road safety efforts of our 2020 award recipients.

We’ve extended the deadline to March 15, but hurry, the clock is ticking.

2. Speak the Lingo

Who says safety can’t be fun? Add these two words to your vocabulary:

  • Edutainment: Entertainment with an educational component added
  • Gamification: Applying the mechanics of a game to a subject to increase engagement

Then, take your driver and transportation safety training from boring to best of class with these six new e-learning games we have added to our virtual Training Center:

  • Distraction Action
  • Driving Basics Bingo
  • Impairment Jeopardy
  • Night Owl
  • Speedway
  • Stat Attack (Family Feud-style)

By using this new game console on our newly launched website, participants are more likely to enjoy what they learn, complete their training assignments and retain the information. Enjoyable learning encourages employees to spread their knowledge through interaction with coworkers, friends and family members – everybody wins! Best of all: There is no cost to play.

3. Be a Card Shark

How much alcohol is too much? Aside from putting away your phone, what can you do before starting your vehicle to reduce distractions?

Get answers to these questions and many more with our updated Safety Coach Cards. Use this free resource to create quick safety talks and lead discussions; the answers to each question appear on the back of the card. Topics covered:

  • Aggressive driving
  • Distracted driving
  • Driving basics
  • Drowsy driving
  • Impaired driving
  • Passenger restraint
  • Pedestrian/bike safety
  • Truck safety

Pick all of the cards on a single topic for a month of discussion, or mix them up for a Jeopardy-style quiz game. Download the set of 112 cards. Then, start dealing in safety.

Online Training: Safety Breakthrough will touch on all aspects of fleet operations.

Learn from Pros

During the pandemic, fleet and workplace drivers have been recognized as heroes keeping America’s supply chain open. That’s one reason I am so excited to be partnering with an old friend, Brian Fielkow, in a four-part online training series that begins March 9: Safety Breakthrough.

Fielkow is the CEO at Houston-based Jetco Delivery and executive VP of The GTI Group. He is respected in the trucking industry as a safety leader. During the series, he will talk with professional drivers, as well as operations, safety and upper-management personnel on how to weave safety discussions into all aspects of fleet operations, from recruitment and retention of drivers to daily dispatch and senior-level strategy meetings.

Click on the registration links to attend:

  • Tuesday, March 9 (10-11 a.m. CT): 14 Leadership Lessons I Wish Someone Had Told Me!
  • Tuesday, April 13 (10-11 a.m. CT): Navigating Discussions with Drivers
  • Tuesday, May 11 (10-11 a.m. CT): Safety and the C-Suite – Engaging Your Leadership Team
  • Tuesday, June 9 (10-11 a.m. CT): Accelerating Recruiting & Onboarding to Attract & Retain Top Drivers

The pros know there is a story to tell about nearly every delivery. Often, there are challenges to overcome, ranging from fuel costs to hours of service. Some of these challenges raise safety concerns, including the risk of fatigue. The trick is to meet deadlines without sacrificing safety. Fielkow is driven by safety. Under his leadership, Jetco Delivery has earned recognition through the annual Our Driving Concern Texas Employer Traffic Safety awards program.

Likewise, your team can be recognized. The deadline to fill out this online application form is March 15.

Hidden Dangers

Employees drive fleet vehicles, company cars and pickups and their personal vehicles for work and pleasure. More than one in four vehicles in Texas has an unrepaired safety recall – and many of those involve defective airbags that can pose life-threatening risks.

The National Safety Council wants to make sure you and your workers stay safe every week, and especially during NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Recalls Week March 8-12. Through Check To Protect, we can help check for recalls in your company parking lot, offer free access to a bulk VIN lookup tool to search your fleet vehicles and provide free promotional materials for your website, e-newsletters and social media channels.

In the meantime, please encourage all of your workers to check their recall status by visiting CheckToProtect.org or texting “RECALL” to 99724. Contact my colleague, NSC Senior Program Manager Tom Musick, at [email protected] for more information about canvassing, bulk VIN lookups and digital assets.
